Unexpected Storage

“Unexpected storage” can be very beautiful and still functional for your life. For the first several years of my babies lives, I had an old wardrobe in our main living area that I would hide their favorite toys in. At the end of the day, or when not in use, the toys would easily and neatly be tucked away into the unsuspecting furniture piece.

Interests change over the years

As my kids have have aged, so have their interests. The kids are (and have been) very much into art and crafts, which I love. Recently, I noticed them starting to pull out the paints more than for the toys. I knew I needed to find a new storage spot for their creative ventures. I had been searching resale pages online for quite a while when I finally found a secretary desk that I thought would look nice and fit our needs. While looking, I made sure to keep our storage interests in mind. Painting and drawing are at the top of the list, but the furniture also had to have some storage for a few favorite toys and our family board games. Again, unsuspecting but still very functional and pretty.

Make Your Storage a little More You!

After securing the secretary desk, I pulled off the top decorative piece to make it a little more my style. I feel like it looks a little more primitive this way. It was very easy to get off, as it was only held on with a few screws and staples.

Style Your Storage Pieces

Once in place, I had so much fun restyling this area and loading it up with all of the kids arts and crafts. I added a corner chair that would be easy for them to pull up to the desk for all of their arts and crafts. Now, this secretary is a bit small for my space. I have 10 ft ceilings in the main living area and this secretary desk is not appropriately scaled for such a large room. That is an easy fix if you find yourself in this same predicament. I added some decor to the top to give it some extra height, but it still needed more.

I love adding books in decor. Keep them the same color for a larger statement.

The perfect touch

A few weeks later, I ran across a very old sign. I loved the coloring and the mention of plumbing, as a nod to my husbands previous career. And it fit perfectly above the secretary and added that extra height I needed. Now, the scale of this area fits the scale of this room more appropriately.
