Stock cabinets to built-in storage bench

I have tossed around the idea of adding bench seating to the breakfast nook since we built this house 3 years ago. I knew that once I started, it would start a trickle effect of “if you give a mouse a cookie.” Would I need a new table? New cushions? A rug? After going back and forth over some different design ideas for the bench and not being fully committed to the idea of giving up my traditional chairs yet. or wanting to start that trickle effect, I decided I would try something very easy. Something I could return if i decided I hated them, but would look like nice built-ins if i decided I liked them.

These are 30″x18″ preassembled, unfinished wall cabinets! I just unboxed them and sat them into place. It can’t get any easier than that! I will add some wood to the tops to give them a finished look. And likely a pretty tufted cushion and some throw pillows. My Dad and I have already given them the sit test and they feel very sturdy. Once we secure them in place and add the wooden bench tops, they will be even more sturdy.

I already love how much cozier it looks in here. This was the only photo I snagged of the space before it got dark on me. Extra points if you can find what doesn’t belong in this photo. I can’t believe I didn’t catch that!

I’ll be back with an update soon! I think its going to be so good!

XOXO,

Brittany

  17. Susan says:

Will there be a space behind them because of baseboards?

    • Brittany Smith says:

There is a dead space behind them. The bench is not as deep as it appears. We added the top and side panel to hide any dead space behind.
