updated bread machine recipe
The best homemade recipe!

I’ve updated my Homemade Bread Recipe in 2023 and it’s even better than ever! I get questions about my recipe and the machine I use ALL THE TIME! Of course, I had to let you know about my improvements 🙂

It’s no secret that 2020 brought out the homemaker in a lot of us. I mean, what else was there to do. 🙃 During that time, I taught myself how to make Homemade Bread Recipe from scratch. It was so fun and rewarding, but boy, it takes awhile and it sure is messy. Shortly after my bread making adventures, my MIL pranced down our driveway holding a bread machine. She had found one in her pantry from years before and thought I’d like to give it a try.

Why I started making my own Homemade Bread

I tucked that machine away in my own pantry and almost forgot about it. I’ve started making homemade bread again, but for new reasons this time. If you’ve been watching my adventures on Instagram, you’ll already know all about the Yuka App I’ve downloaded. It scans your food and tells you all about the yuck thats going into them {warning: if you download this, get ready to feel sick at what is allowed into our food}. For the most part, our family does really well about eating clean foods, except for when it comes to bread and cereal. My kids are so set on certain breads and cereals and, wouldn’t you know, they are loaded with those hazardous additives. So, out of the pantry came that bread machine!

This Bread Machine makes bread faster and easier!

Most days, I don’t have the time to dedicate to making loaves of bread from scratch, but I still wanted to to make bread that I knew didn’t have any of those harmful ingredients. I decided to give the bread machine a try and was so impressed. The loaves looked and tasted identical to the loaves I was making by hand prior to having this machine! When I tell you all you have to do is drop the ingredients in and walk away, THAT IS IT. You’ll come back roughly 2.5-3 hours later to a perfectly cooked loaf of homemade bread. Your house will smell amazing and you won’t be poisoning yourself and your family. 😵‍💫

I’ve been using a recipe that came with my bread machine, but there are a lot of options on Pinterest. It may take some trial and error to get it just the way you like it, but it’s so worth it. I also add a smidge more sugar in the bread trying to bring my kids over to the clean side. They are like little crackheads you have to wean off of the drugs the government has allowed into our foods. {That’s one of those funny/not funny ones 🙃 … but I digress.}

Below is the recipe I’ve been using for one and a half pound white bread loaf. My machine has an option for one and a half to two pounds, I’ve always just made the smaller one.

*Updated for 2023: Bread Machine Recipe Ingredients

  • 1 cup + 2 Tbsp warm water
  • 2 Tbsp Sugar
  • 3 Tsp honey (optional)
  • 1 Tbsp Milk Powder
  • 4 Tsp Olive Oil **This one is the GAME CHANGING SECRET INGREDIENT!
  • 1-1/2 Tsp Salt
  • 2.5 Cups Bread flour
  • 2-1/2 Tsp Bread machine yeast

Place ingredients into the bread pan in the following order: warm water, sugar, honey and whisk until dissolved. Now add your instant yeast and let it sit until it gets foamy (usually about 10 minutes). Once thats nice and foamy, add in 1 Tbsp of milk powder, (and for the important change) olive oil, salt and bread flour {following the order is very important.} Your machine may be slightly different from mine, but I always cook my bread on the basic setting. If your machine has a color option for the crust, I always choose light, but that’s up to your preference. Also, make sure to specify your pounds, if there is an option for that. This recipe is for the 1.5 lb loaf.

I can’t wait to order my machine now. Have you ever used or heard of Kamut flour? It is supposed to be the best for homemade bread. I just wonder if it works in a bread machine too.

  2. Denise Altland says:

I almost make a loaf daily now! Such a great recipe… and it makes the house smell wonderful 🙂
    Thank you for sharing!

  4. Valeria Burton says:

I made my first loaf and the top was uneven and the bottom had the blade marks. Do you take the blade out and reshape the loaf after it’s done kneading it?
    What am I doing wrong?

  5. Valerie says:

Did you say you used honey in the recipe?

  6. Robie Collins says:

Love this recipe! Purchased the bread machine you have when it was on sale and it’s perfect!!! Thank you for sharing!!!

I like using molasses instead of sugar and fresh milk instead of water and dry powdered milk, in my bread dough. Oh and some pink Himalayan sea salt. If you can get your wheat ground fresh (within a couple hours before mixing the dough) that’s going to deliver you the most nutrition and flavor. White white may be easier to start with.

  9. Lisa says:

B-Do you ever or have you ever used gluten free flour in your recipe above? Or do you have a recipe for G/F bread for the bread machine?
    I appreciate your help always💖
    Love your home and family🌲🌲

Got the same bread machine you have for Christmas. Ready to start making my bread. You mentioned a setting for lbs in a reel. Does this machine have that setting and if so what do you set yours too. What are the actual ingredients (brands) do you use

    • Brittany Smith says:

Hey friend! So the one i linked is the one they made in place of my discontinued bread maker. I’m not sure it that one has the lb settings but if it does, I always bake the 1.5 lb loaf.

  11. Beth Gomez says:

What kind of dry milk powder do you use? Is it whole or nonfat? And does that matter?
    Thank you!

    • Brittany Smith says:

Its nonfat but i don’t think it matters much. Ive also used regular ole milk in place of dry milk and it turned out just the same if you don’t have any milk powder on hand.

  12. Kate says:

Silly question – but is the olive oil in place of the butter? When you listed the order to put in the ingredients, you said flour then butter, but I don’t see butter as an ingredient. Only asking as I need all help I can get. Thanks

  13. Anita says:

I cannot wait to make this updated version. I’ve been making the original version but I know this one will be better! lol Thanks for sharing. We love your Chicken Pot Pie too.

  14. Diana Underwood says:

This made the best bread my machine has ever made. Unfortunately, it was so stuck in the kneading blade, I had to mangle the loaf to get it out. I’m so sad. What am I doing wrong? How can I prevent this? Usually it just slides out! Thanks!

    • Oh no! You may have to try flour or butter measurements or maybe the cooking time on your machine? Sort of like how everyone else’s oven is different. Let me know!
