Secret’s out: I bought a little old house! Can you believe that I’ve owned this cutie for a few weeks and didn’t tell you yet? I can hardly believe it either. Do you know what’s even crazier? I bought it before telling my very own husband! HA! Makes those unexplained Target runs sound a little better now, #amiright?
One Sunday, after eating at my MIL’s (like we do every Sunday), I was sitting on the couch, minding my own business browsing Marketplace like I do often and saw the cutest little house for sale! I immediately got so excited because adding more rental properties has been on our radar since we started renting last January. We are constantly on the hunt for smaller homes, but it has been nearly impossible to find anything with the housing market the way it is currently.
Mark was out of town teaching a course so I asked my MIL to take a ride with me to see this little house. She’s amazing and agreed right away. A short thirty minutes later I was standing in the front yard of the cutest little blue cottage. We were able to do a full walk through and boy, it was in rough shape. However, all I could see was all the potential under all the years of neglect. So, I bought it that same day!
I know many of you found Thorn Cove Abode from the work we did redoing a home we call “The Little House.” As you can see, I love a good renovation, but you do have to have something to work with. For this cottage, the little front stoop and curved slope over the front door gave me hope this could be a true stunner in the end. But I will say the house is MUCH older than anything I have worked with yet. The house was built in 1940. Could this be my first actual OLD house purchase?
We were able to close quickly (as you can imagine the seller wanted this off their hands asap.) I have so many ideas and dreams for this home! My Dad and I have been going over there almost every day and it seems the to do list just grows. It’s been A LOT of hard work and a definite team effort, but we’ve had fun along the way too. I would be lost without my Daddy!
One of the real treasures we’ve come across is the original tongue and groove walls and even ceilings. They are so beautiful! It’s amazing they have made it this long uncovered and unpainted. I’m thinking about leaving them all in their natural wood, but may change my mind later. I hate to paint natural wood walls that have made it 83 years without paint! I may end up needing to paint them to brighten up some spaces, but I still have time to decide.
While many of you know that the home we live in is a new build we make look “old”, this house is going to the opposite. It’s old and needs to be updated, but still maintain its character. I plan to preserve what I can and ensure it gives a nod to its 1940’s roots, but definitely functional for this century. Thankfully, many of the doors and the original glass knobs are in good shape so we have a lot to work with.
While I have so many ideas for this house, I am stuck on what to name it. Definitely something with “cottage” in it, but otherwise, I got nothing. Let me know if you think of something cute!
Be sure to follow along on my IG stories “cottage” highlight as I share more behind the scenes. I will be sure to post updates regularly here on the blog too!
Cove Cottage is my vote
Oh man! Thats a good one!!
Love this! As for the name…is it on a cool street name, something like “cottage on elm” or maybe “oak cottage” assuming all that tongue and groove is oak lol. Last one, maybe think of a flower you can plant on the property and call it that “rose cottage”, “magnolia cottage”
Oh, thats a great idea! Thank you! I think the walls are all pine.
You said the walls are pine, so what about Pine Cottage….pretty obvious right?
Just throwing this out there!
TWEE Cottage …
TWEE is a synonym for “quaint”
Left a suggestion on your IG – “Dovecote Cottage”!
The cottage or I really like what someone else said, pine cottage
Rose or Rosewood Cottage would be in line with your brand and also a nod to the sweet hand painted roses or wallpaper you found. 💕
I cannot wait to see you work your magic! it’s going to be amazing.
Smith Cottage ❤️
It’s adorable! Looking forward to seeing the progress.
Thorn Cottage!
Oh I love it! So much potential and so much workout you’ve got this. How about Hope Cottage?or Serendipity? Can’t wait to see the journey with her
I dm’ed you yesterday with Cottage COVE and it looks popular! A little alliteration is always good! It will be gorgeous 😍.
The other suggestions are good but what about “Cutie Pie Cottage?” You keep saying how cute it is plus you unveiled it on or about Valentine’s Day. Just my two cents.
“The little blue cottage” just like your blog states.
How exciting ! I know you’ll bring its beauty out and put your special touches and make it so lovely . Looking forward to seeing what you do to the cottage. I think the more you work on the cottage and get to know her you’ll find her name❤️❤️
Congratulations!!! What a big, bold, exciting thing to do! I’m excited and happy for you! Love that idea someone posted on IG, Rose Cottage because if it’s like to Thorn Cove 😀🌹❤️
I thought that was super cute too!
Life’s a Hoot Cottage
Cottage Cove Abode 🤍
oh, thats cute. I like that cove is included.
This is going to be a great watching journey, very exciting!
If you keep spraying the walls to get the tar paper off you should use a large tank garden sprayer and save your ‘trigger’ finger.
Thats a great suggestion. I’m afraid it would all dry again before I got to it though… I’m having to work in small sections and the scraping is time consuming.
How about the “forgotten cottage”, “lil o cottage “ or “enlightened cottage” which would make more sense once it’s redone💁♀️
Love those! Cute!
The Cozy Cove Cottage 💖.
I can’t wait to see the entire process and of course, the beauty finished!!!!!!
The Primrose Cottage or Primrose Abode. She’s so cute, so much charm and character. Congratulations ❤
It is adorable! Can’t wait to see what you do with her ❤️
We always called that type of steep roof a Cat Slide, so how about Cat Slide Cottage.?
I’ve never heard it referred to as that! Adorable.
Lovvvvve this cutie!! I’m like you. I can look at an old, neglected home, and see the potential to give it new life. There’s a house near my parents’ that I’m dying to get my hands on.
I’m so excited to follow along as you give this house your touch! When you had us guess something that was coming (Janky to Swanky), I actually guessed a “Janky to Swanky House”. And here it is!
My name suggestion is The Quaint Cottage. ♥️
Congratulations. I can’t help seeing the front as an old charming country church. The names Grace Cottage and Faith Cottage came to mind but then all of a sudden New Hope Cottage sprung up.
What cute suggestions!
The Sunday Cottage. Since it all came to be on a Sunday…found it, walk through and purchased! Good luck with the renovations!
I love that!
Such a cutie!! . I am sure it will be a great investment.
How about Little Blue Cottage since that’s how you described it when you first saw it.
Cottage might be nice. But I definitely think it outta be called “Brittany’s Bungalow” cuz that sounds more 1940’ish 🥰😁😘
It’s going to be a stunner! 😍 Swanky Cottage🤣

That is such a cute name! Thank you for the suggestion.
Cottage Pine
Cute!
Opportunity Cottage or Second Chance Cottage
Working with your name but switching it up how about a synonym for thorn and it could be Sweet Briar Cottage or Thistlewood Cottage.
Those are cute!
Love this! Can’t wait to see it come to life. Looks like a “Gnome Cottage” to me 😉
lol, thats so cute.
The Jolly Ole’ Cottage or The Jolly Cottage
For your dad! It will be beautiful.
Thats really cute. I just to have a little side hustle refinishing and painting furniture called Jolley ol’ Junk.
Cottage 40
Not to get personal for safety reasons but the street name then “cottage”. Example: Newberry Cottage. Or The Cottage on Newberry. Just an idea.
Thats a cute idea. There street name isn’t very cute, unfortunately.
Could this be a little Tudor Style ? As in rip that siding off and you will have a beautiful brick home on the outside too. Talk about curb appeal! I live in a late 30’s tudor home and it truly looks like a fairytale home on the outside. See what’s underneath that siding🤷♀️
Unfortunately, there is nothing exciting under the vinyl. Can’t win them all, I suppose. More than likely will be revinyled.
So excited to see this transformation!
How about the “demi lune cottage”, highlighting the shape of the front steps and door?😊
Dreamers Cottage ♥️
The Keebler (Elves) Cottage
Smith Cottage
I love your projects. I always liked having a project.
What about “The Ole Cute Little Cottage” , I know that’s not very creative, but hey I’m old.
Can’t wait to see the finished project. Love the front door. Little Cottage Abode
Yеs! Finalⅼy something about impossible.
I LOVE IT!! I’m so happy that you bought it and I can watch you and your dad renovate the cottage. I know it will be stunning! So many great name suggestions too. Something with “thorn” “cove” or “abode” in the name.
Rose Cove Cottage. It pops!
You are so inspiring! Can’t wait to see this cutie completed.
Names:
The Cove Cottage
The Sunshine Cottage
The Lucky Cottage
The Sevi Cottage
It’s so cute! My house was also built in 1940 and it’s a very similar style to this one – hobbit door, chimney in the front, etc. I just love that tiny window next to the door…I feel like it’s screaming to be a cute little antique stained glass window. Can’t wait to see the transformation!
Oh, I love that idea! That little window needs a lot of tlc anyway… a stained glass window would be so beautiful.
I love Cove Cottage Abode. It will be a home where some one will take up their abode in that house. Where a lot of time and love & patience abides in the process. Of making it a home!
Could your house be a Sears kit house?? It has some similarities to some we have here in Ohio.
I have been looking into that too but so far have not come across the exact home. I also haven’t noticed any markings on wood or fixtures that would indicate such. Going to continue to investigate though, because it is suspiciously close.
I like Cove cottage!! Can’t wait to see what you do with it!!!
So cute! I vote Cove Cottage!
love the name Rose Cottage then just like you said add roses. Great idea.
Bluebell cottage! It is darling- can’t wait to watch the transformation.
ok thats cute, but all i can think of is thats our favorite Ice Cream.☺️
